Napa Valley Choral Society (NVCS) and Sing Napa Valley! (SNV) open their 50th Anniversary season with Handel's Messiah. Accompanying them will be Symphony Napa Valley and professional soloists. Conductors include Jan Lanterman, artistic director of NVCS and the conductor of SNV! who promises a fresh, lively performance almost dance-like in nature. Plan on helping NVCS and SNV celebrate their 50th anniversary and get a head start on ushering in the holidays yourself!
The time-honored Messiah is a tradition in many communities throughout the world. Written 272 years ago and first performed in Dublin, this beloved oratorio has stood the test of time and has thrilled audiences worldwide ever since. Notes on his manuscript indicate that Handel began composing Messiah on Saturday, August 22, and finished on September 14! Of its initial performance, Brian Boydell, former dean of the music school at Trinity College in Dublin said, "It is...the most important piece of music ever written in western Europe!" Others have called it "the greatest music of the western world."
